Chapter 7. E-Mail Made Easy > Organizing Your E-Mail

Organizing Your E-Mail

How many e-mail messages do you receive every day? Even if your daily delivery is a measly 10 new messages each day, that can add up over time. And if you work for a company that uses e-mail extensively, you might receive 100 or more messages every single day. If you leave all those messages in your Inbox, eventually it becomes stuffed with hundreds or even thousands of individual items, making it nearly impossible for you to find what you’re looking for when you need it. The solution? Sort your messages into folders, either manually or automatically, using message rules.

Filing Messages in Folders

When you first begin using Outlook Express, you have five folders to work with. In the Folder List, these appear under the Local Folders icon. As you might guess from the name, these folders are stored locally on your computer. You can’t rename, move, or delete these folders. When you retrieve e-mail messages from a POP3 server using your Internet e-mail account, the downloaded messages are stored here. You can also move messages from your Web-based e-mail accounts, such as those on MSN and Hotmail, so that they’re always available on your computer and aren’t automatically deleted from the server when you reach your storage limits.
