Software Considerations in a Multiuser System

Mac OS X is a multiuser system. When it comes to installing software, this seemingly small detail really matters. For one thing, not all users might have the same privileges on the system. When you set up user accounts, as will be explained in Chapter 31, “Sharing Your Computer with Other Users,” you have the option to prevent others from modifying the system in any way. That includes installing additional software.

When installing some software, or even updating existing software, you may have to enter the password you created when you set up your account. This is meant to ensure that you, the administrator of your computer, approve of whatever changes are being made.
