Chapter 38. Exploring the Utilities Folder

Tucked inside the Applications folder is a folder called Utilities, which stores a treasure trove of helpful applications. Some of those “utilities” are employed by your system to carry out common tasks, whereas others are tools that you can use for specific purposes. In this chapter, we talk about each of these applications and, where appropriate, refer back to previous chapters where they were mentioned.

You may find extra items in the Utilities folder in addition those described here. For example, if Mac OS X's Software Update finds a hardware update for iPod, iSight, or even your computer's built-in disc drive, that update is installed in the Utilities folder until the device it affects is run. You can delete these items, which are typically clearly labeled, after they have been installed.
