Chapter 2. Diving into Windows > Defining Your Own Desktop Shortcuts

Defining Your Own Desktop Shortcuts

The best way to define a shortcut for easy access depends on the type of file you're dealing with. If the item is a document or Web page, you can simply click on its icon and drag it to a clear space on your desktop.

When you attempt to drag-and-drop an icon, one of two things will happen. Either it appears on your desktop on the spot, or Windows launches a dialog box saying it can't move the selected item in that manner. If Windows is unable to create the shortcut on the spot, it asks you if you really intended to make a shortcut. Click the Yes button, and Windows does what it needs to build the shortcut.
