Q&A

Q1: Do I really need to worry about local security with my family computer?
A1: With Mac OS X, yes! The UNIX system, although a wonderful tool, is very unforgiving. Typing rm -r * from the wrong place can quickly erase your entire system without any warning. Even experienced UNIX users occasionally slip up and type something they shouldn’t. Although I encourage you to get your family interested in the system, be sure everyone understands the consequences of the command line!
Q2: How can I check for attack attempts?
A2: Many of the network firewall packages mentioned in this hour can log attempts to attack your system. In addition, you can keep an eye on the /var/log/system.log and /var/log/secure.log files to see whether there are any login attempts that have failed. To reach them, select Go To File from the Finder’s Go menu and type /var/log/.
