Diagnostics

With a complex operating system such as Mac OS X, things can sometimes go wrong, and you’re left with little recourse for solving the problem. Operations such as repairing damaged Mac OS X installations, resetting the root password, and fixing damaged disks can all be performed even if your machine isn’t booting into the operating system properly.

Safe Boot

Mac OS X 10.2 . introduces Safe Boot mode in Mac OS X (or, rather, brings back a feature from Mac OS 8 and 9). By holding down the Shift key while starting up your Mac, you bypass loading any additional software other than what’s absolutely necessary to get your system running. This is an excellent way to start a computer that isn’t functioning properly and remove software that might be conflicting with the operating system.
