Mac OS X provides dozens of ways to automate your system—most of which depend on writing programs in one of the many included UNIX programming languages. That’s great if you’re interested in learning the ins and outs of UNIX processes or are striving to become a UNIX administrator, but it isn’t very helpful for the day-to-day tasks that the Macintosh is known to excel at. So, how can ordinary Macintosh users control their Mac without resorting to hardcore programming?

The answer is AppleScript—Apple’s Mac OS X built-in scripting language. Using AppleScript, you can make your existing programs work together in ways that the original publishers never intended.
