Hour 1. A Tour of Mac OS X > Setting Up Mac OS X

Setting Up Mac OS X

The first time Mac OS X starts, it runs Setup Assistant, which helps you set up the basic features of the operating system. During the setup procedure, your network settings are configured and your registration details are sent back to Apple.

Apple began shipping Mac OS X on its computers in the fall of 2001. According to Apple, Mac OS X runs on all original G4 computers, all iBooks and iMacs (including the Bondi 233), all PowerBooks (except the original Powerbook G3), and all beige desktop G3s. However, keep in mind that the computers in that list with slower processors or little memory might run Mac OS X less than optimally.

For help installing Mac OS X from scratch, consult Appendix A, “Installing Mac OS X.”
