Chapter 19. Using the Task Manager > Managing Individual Processes

Managing Individual Processes

The Processes tab contains information about all of the processes running on your computer. Each application that runs under Windows XP can run as a single process, or it may launch several processes. Additionally, the operating system itself runs a large number of processes in the background. For each network service, for example, one or more processes run on your computer. Processes for the printing spooler function wait in the background, ready to accept printing requests, and then send them out to the designated printer.

Figure 19.4 shows the Task Manager with the Processes tab selected. Here, you can see each and every process that runs on your computer. If more than one user is logged into the computer, use the check box at the bottom of this window labeled Show Processes from All Users to get a complete listing.
