Chapter 4. Unattended Installation and Sysprep > Syntax for the Setup Command

Syntax for the Setup Command

Although you can easily start up the installation of Windows XP by simply inserting the CD and choosing either an upgrade or install from the menu, you can also choose to use a command line to perform these functions. For 16-bit systems (such as Windows 95), the command is winnt.exe. For 32-bit operating systems (such as Windows NT), the command is winnt32.exe.

For a single installation, the menu is the easiest installation method to use. In environments requiring a large number of installations or upgrades, using the command can simplify matters and allow for automated installations. The system administrator can place the source files on a network share and avoid having to visit each PC with a CD in hand for running the Setup program.
