Chapter 22. Performance Monitoring, Logs... > Understanding Performance Issues for...

Understanding Performance Issues for Windows XP

Before you start monitoring your system, and especially before you start trying to improve its performance by buying new hardware or uninstalling applications, it is important that you understand some of the underlying factors that influence your computer's performance. It is useful to divide these factors into three broad categories: hardware, Windows configuration, and installed software. This section takes a look at the general hardware issues relating to performance and then looks at some ways that you can configure Windows and additional software to improve performance.

Before going too far, however, you should set yourself some realistic expectations and take an honest look at your system. If your computer has always been fast enough for you, but you have noticed a significant slowdown over a fairly short period of time, the techniques in this chapter will probably help you a good bit. Likewise, if you are just the type of person that likes to keep their computer running in top form, this chapter can help.
