Chapter 27. Overview of Windows XP Multi... > New Folders—It's Not Just My Documen...

New Folders—It's Not Just My Documents Anymore!

The My Documents folder has been around for quite some time now. However, as we continually advance into newer formats for storing data, the term document just doesn't cover the wide territory that is available on a modern computer. Instead, you have all sorts of files. You can classify some files under the My Documents folders. Examples of these types of files can be word processing files or perhaps spreadsheet or other data files. However, when it comes to multimedia, there are several ways you can categorize your files, and thus make them easier to find. These include the My Music, My Pictures, and My Videos folders.

Remember that if you are just one user of a computer running Windows XP, you will have your own set of the aforementioned folders. For each person who has a local account on the Windows XP computer, there is a separate user profile, as well as a separate collection of these folders. You can choose to share them or not. For more information about sharing folders and files, see Chapter 9, “Working With Files and Folders.” You will also find additional information about what folders you can protect from access by other users, depending on whether you join a domain, by reading several other chapters, such as Chapter 18, “Managing Disks and Partitions,” and Chapter 26, “Joining a Domain and the Active Directory.”
