Playing Games

Windows includes a number of games, from the classic Solitaire that has been included with almost every version of Windows ever shipped to Internet versions of Checkers, Spades, and Backgammon that automatically find a player of your skill level and set up a game for you. Since there are numerous games included with Windows XP, each with its own rules and strategies, and because games are really outside the scope of this book, this section presents only a brief description of the games available. These include the following:

  • FreeCell—A Solitaire game, in which you must move all cards to their home cells (stacks), using free cells as placeholders. To win, you must create a stack for each suit in its home cell, stacked in order of rank.

  • Hearts and Internet Hearts—A four-player (you and three computer-controlled opponents) card game whose object is to have the lowest score at the end the game. At the end of each hand, you receive one point for each heart in your hand plus 13 points for holding the Queen of spades. The object while playing each hand, of course, is to get rid of these cards.

  • Internet Games—These are versions of the classic games Backgammon, Checkers, Reversi (more commonly known as Othello), and Spades that are played against other Windows users over the Internet.

  • Minesweeper—A game in which you must locate all of the mines on a grid within a time limit without actually uncovering any of them.

  • Pinball—A 3D pinball game (meaning that the game actually looks like a pinball machine).

  • Solitaire—The classic solo card game in which you must build a stack for each suit of cards from lowest to highest value.

  • Spider Solitaire—Another solo card game in which you must uncover all of the cards from ten stacks using the fewest possible moves.
