Preparing Your Computer for XP

As with any upgrade or install, there are several important steps to take before you stick in the new operating system CD and begin your upgrade or installation. These may seem obvious at first, but it is worth mentioning the obvious because today many people have become used to simple upgrades in which no problems occur. However, Windows XP is a significant upgrade. It is the convergence of the Windows 95/98 code base with the Windows NT/2000 (and now XP) code base, so things may not be as easy as they were in the past. The following precautions should be taken before you just pop in the CD and start an upgrade or install.

It's Cleanup Time: Uninstall Unnecessary Applications and Components

If you have applications or components of the operating system installed that you no longer use and don't intend to use, now is a good time to get rid of them. Cleaning unnecessary apps and components from your system can save time during the upgrade or installation of Windows XP.
