Using the Recovery Console

The Recovery Console feature is not for the uninitiated! You need to have a very good understanding of how Windows XP works before using this feature. Additionally, in order to use Recovery Console, you need to either boot from the Windows XP installation CD or you can install the Recovery Console onto your workstation so that it shows up in the list of operating system choices presented by the BOOT.INI menu.

Starting Recovery Console from the Windows XP Installation CD

Some computers are set up to check the A: drive, then the CD-ROM drive, and finally the C: drive to look for a boot sector. Some will prompt you to ask if you want to boot from the CD-ROM. To boot from the Windows XP CD, you will need to know which method your computer uses. Place the CD in the CD-ROM drive and reboot the computer. If you see a prompt, respond to it.
