Chapter 19. Using the Task Manager

In This Chapter

Ever have one of those days when a misbehaving application just wouldn't exit when you wanted to close it? How about when everything on the computer just runs slower than usual? If you have plenty of time and expertise, you can use the System Monitor to find the problem (see Chapter 22, “Performance Monitoring, Logs, and Alerts”). However, if you want to use a much simpler tool, turn to the Task Manager. The Windows XP Professional Task Manager allows you to do several things. Like the System Monitor, it can show you performance statistics in a real-time fashion to give you quick glance at how memory and the central processing unit (CPU) in your computer are being used. In addition, you can get statistical information about how well your network card is handling the load on your local area network.
