Because the Windows XP operating system merges what were essentially two separate product lines—the Windows 95/98/Me platforms and those based on the Windows NT kernel (such as Windows 2000)—problems may arise with running legacy applications. Microsoft has done a considerable amount of work to make the transition to this new, single kernel platform much easier for both developers and end users. Many Windows XP features are intended to intercept problems with legacy applications to make them work in spite of themselves.
