This book is the result of a lot of effort put forth by many people. Given the timetable for the release of Windows XP and the difficulty of writing about an operating system that was refined and honed carefully during the beta and release candidate phases, this book would not have been possible without the help of my co-authors and the supporting cast of characters at Sams. With their great contributions, the book you hold in your hands contains the most up-to-date information about Windows XP that I think you will find for sale in your local bookstore. All of the co-authors of this book have computer book pedigrees that prove their writing skills as well as their technical knowledge. I could not have done this without them!

However, it is not just the authors who are responsible for making a book like this one as complete and accurate as possible. There are many people who work behind the scenes performing such chores as copy editing, technical editing and other tasks that are part of computer book publishing. I would like to thank Steve Rowe, the development editor of this book, for his suggestions during the early writing phase of this book. Steve knows the target audience very well and his approach as to how this book should be written will make it much easier for you to read and understand. He also played a large part in the organization of the material found herein, making it easier for you to find what you need to know in a hurry. In addition, Lorna Gentry assisted with the development work on this book and thus helped to make it a better book. If you look at the masthead of this book, you'll see the names of many other important behind-the-scenes people who helped with creating this book, including the copy editors, technical editor, and others. These people are rarely recognized for the valuable work they do. Without them, this book would not exist!

I would especially like to thank Vicki Harding, an agent who works for the Studio B literary agency, and Terry Neal, the Executive Editor at Sams, for giving me the opportunity to write this book. Both have prodded me along to try to get this book out as soon as possible, while keeping it accurate and loaded with useful information for the reader.

Thanks also go to Michael D. Parrott and Associates of Raleigh, NC who help keep me from having to deal with a lot of things so I can find time to write. Thanks also to Angelo Simeo and John Rogue of The Computer Merchant, who have kept me employed for many years and encouraged me to continue in the writing field.

Finally, I would like to thank my parents and family for supporting me in this and other writing efforts that I have worked on for many years.
