Summary

This chapter introduced two of the most popular and useful open source applications available and showed how they are integrated to create a truly powerful database development platform. Perl offers features from languages such as C, but is friendly and flexible enough to appeal to both beginners and experienced programmers. MySQL, on the other hand, provides a powerful database system that can be used to develop commercial solutions for a fraction of the price. By installing a few Perl modules, the power of both products can be combined. Moving Mac OS to a Unix base has opened an entirely new world of software to the Mac user.
