kill

kill Sends a signal to a process or terminates a process.
kill [-<signal>] %<job> | <pid>

kill -l

-l Lists the signal names.
<signal> Specifies which signal to send to a process. If <signal> is not specified, the TERM (terminate) signal is sent. <signal> may be a number or name.
%<job> Specifies the job that should receive a signal.
<pid> Specifies the process ID which should receive a signal. The process ID can be determined by running ps.
Signal KILL (9) is a sure way to kill a process. Signal HUP is another common signal to send to a process. You may want to send a HUP signal to a process to get it to reread its configuration file.
