Summary

This chapter rounded out the user configuration options for Mac OS X. The Apple- supplied System Preferences panels give user-friendly control over a wide variety of system functions. These panels can be thought of as analogous to the older control panels of Mac OS 9.x. This chapter covered the System Preferences panels that control each user's desktop environment.

There are additional panels, and additional coverage is provided in other chapters where appropriate. If you did not find the information you were looking for here, it is likely covered in greater detail elsewhere. We apologize that all system preferences couldn't be covered completely in one area, but the size and complexity of Mac OS X results in trade-offs of where to place content. We chose to keep like topics together. Because of this, the QuickTime panel is covered with the QuickTime Player in Chapter 7, “Internet Communications”; Software Update is discussed in Chapter 32, “System Maintenance”; and network configuration is found in Chapter 9, “Network Setup.”
