Part IV: Late Afternoon Internet Integration > Tying Windows into the Web

Hour 12. Tying Windows into the Web

With Windows XP, Internet Explorer supports several features not previously found, such as an integrated media player for listening to audio Web content while you view Web pages. In addition, you can customize the Explorer bar to display information that interests you, such as your local weather and news.

Those of you who want to communicate with other users will appreciate the MSN Messenger feature that Microsoft has now integrated into Internet Explorer. By signing up for a Passport account, which is free, you can access Microsoft's free e-mail and chat service.

Of course, in today's world of interconnected communications, you must be careful to protect your connection from unauthorized access. Windows XP provides security features with which you can help keep others from accessing your computer through your Internet connection.

In this hour, you will

  • Customize Internet Explorer's Personal bar

  • Listen to Internet audio

  • Set up a Microsoft Passport

  • Communicate with others using the instant messaging feature of MSN Messenger

  • Set up a firewall to protect your Internet connection
