Part III: Early Afternoon Windows Exploration > Using the Desktop Accessories

Hour 10. Using the Desktop Accessories

Windows XP comes with several application programs you can use right away to do work. These programs—Calculator, WordPad, and Paint—all appear on your Start menu's Accessories menu list. As their names suggest, you can perform calculations, create text documents, and paint pictures by using these three accessory programs.

The Calculator program comes in handy when you want to perform quick calculations without the need of a more powerful program such as an electronic spreadsheet. WordPad does not offer the power of Microsoft Word, but you can create formatted word processed documents quickly and easily with WordPad. Paint is a simple but effective drawing program that you can use to create colorful pictures.

In this hour, you will

  • Use the Windows Calculator program

  • Discover differences between the scientific and standard calculators

  • Create word processed documents with WordPad

  • Use Paint to create colorful graphics

  • See which advanced Paint editing tools professionally manipulate your images
