Lesson 1. Navigating Windows 2000 Profes... > What Is Windows 2000 Professional?

What Is Windows 2000 Professional?

Windows 2000 is an operating system. It controls the hardware of your computer and interprets the instructions from your software and operating systems to the hardware. When you use a menu command such as File,Save, Windows 2000 Professional is the driving force that writes the file to your disk or hard drive.

Windows 2000 Professional includes such features as multitasking, or the ability to run more than one program at a time. It uses a graphical user interface (GUI), which allows you to get up and running through the use of pictures and graphics, instead of having to type out long commands to the operating system. Programs designed to run under Windows 2000 Professional (such as Microsoft Word or Lotus Notes) use similar keyboard and mouse operations to select objects and choose commands. Video and graphics applications run smoothly on Windows 2000 Professional, enabling multimedia programs to run quickly and efficiently. Windows 2000 Professional also incorporates Web functions into the desktop.
