Installing Software

Most applications today come with their own installation programs, so installing software is a fairly simple process. But before you start, check these items:

  • First, make sure you exit any programs you might be running. Because most installation programs make changes to your system files, exiting your programs will prevent any conflicts from occurring. In addition, you might need to restart your computer during the installation, so exiting your programs prevents any possible loss of data.

  • If you're upgrading your software to a newer version, be sure to make copies of all your existing data, in case something happens to it during the upgrade process. Also, be aware that some programs (but certainly not the majority) require you to uninstall the previous version before upgrading. Most, however, allow you to upgrade on top of the existing software. Read the installation manual before proceeding.
