Part I: Unleashing Windows 98 Installati... > Start Me Up: Controlling Windows 98 ...

Chapter 3. Start Me Up: Controlling Windows 98 Startup

IN THIS CHAPTER

The White Rabbit put on his spectacles. “Where shall I begin, your Majesty?” he asked.

“Begin at the beginning,” the King said, very gravely, “and go on till you come to the end: then stop.”

Lewis Carroll, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

Assuming Windows 98 is now safely installed, you can begin your journey, appropriately enough, at the beginning: the startup process. At first blush, this might seem like a surprising topic for an entire chapter. After all, the Windows 98 startup procedure gives new meaning to the term no-brainer: You turn on your system, and a few seconds later, Windows 98 reports for duty. What's to write about?

You'd be surprised. The progress of a typical boot appears uneventful only because Windows 98 uses a whole host of default options for startup. By changing these defaults, you can take control of the startup process and make Windows 98 start your way. This chapter takes you through the entire startup process, from go to whoa, and shows you the options you can use to customize it.
