Part VI: Unleashing Windows 98 Communica... > Getting Started with Modem Communica...

Chapter 26. Getting Started with Modem Communications

IN THIS CHAPTER

There is no pleasure to me without communication: there is not so much as a sprightly thought comes into my mind that it does not grieve me to have produced alone, and that I have no one to tell it to.

Michel de Montaigne

These days, the de rigueur accessory for PC fashion plates is the modem. Everyone, it seems, is flocking online like so many swallows to Capistrano. The Internet, of course, is the Big Thing, but folks are connecting to commercial services, bulletin boards, and other online locales in record numbers. And we're not talking only about the extroverts of the world, such as Montaigne, who just wanted to reach out and modem someone, anyone. No, people of all walks of life, temperaments, and levels of expertise are surfing like there's no tomorrow.

If you've upgraded from Windows 3.1, you'll see that Windows 98 has jumped on this modem bandwagon in a big way with a totally revamped communications subsystem, easier modem setup, and some decent communications applets. This chapter gives you some background in modem communications and shows you how to get your modem's mojo working. Chapter 27, “Putting Your Modem to Work,” shows you how to work a couple of Windows 98 applets: Phone Dialer and HyperTerminal.
