Part III: Unleashing Files, Folders, and... > Wielding the Windows 98 System Tools

Chapter 17. Wielding the Windows 98 System Tools

IN THIS CHAPTER

He is safe from danger who is on guard even when safe.

Publilius Syrus

Computer problems, like the proverbial death and taxes, seem to be one of those constants in life. Whether it's a hard disk giving up the ghost, a power failure that trashes your files, or a virus that invades your system, the issue isn't whether something will go wrong, but when will it happen.

Instead of dealing with these difficulties only after they occur (what I call pound-of-cure mode), you need to get your system prepared in advance (ounce-of-prevention mode). This chapter shows you various Windows 98 utilities and techniques that can help you do just that. In particular, I'll show you how to use all the new utilities that come with the Windows 98 package, including Registry Scan, System File Checker, System Troubleshooter, Microsoft System Information Utility, the Maintenance Wizard, the Task Scheduler, and System Recovery.
