Chapter 3. Start Me Up: Controlling Wind... > Creating Your Own Startup Logo

Creating Your Own Startup Logo

The Windows 98 startup logo is nice enough, but you might prefer to see your own custom screen. For example, you might want to display your company logo or a message to other users of the computer. Impossible? Not at all, as you'll see in this section.

The secret is to create or modify a bitmap and store it in the root folder of your boot drive under the name LOGO.SYS. You can use Paint to do this, so begin by selecting Start | Programs | Accessories | Paint. LOGO.SYS uses a 320×400 bitmap, and the image you use must be the same size. (This is despite the fact that IO.SYS displays LOGO.SYS at 640×480. Go figure.) How you proceed from here depends on whether you want to create a new image or use an existing image.
