Chapter 30. Remote Computing with Dial-U... > Working with Dial-Up Networking Sett...

Working with Dial-Up Networking Settings

Dial-Up Networking has a few settings that apply to all your connectoids. To get to these settings, select Connections | Settings to display the Dial-Up Networking properties sheet shown in Figure 30.13. Here are your options:

Show an icon on taskbar after connected: If you deactivate this check box, Dial-Up Networking doesn't display its icon in the system tray.

Prompt for information before dialing: If you deactivate this check box, Dial-Up Networking won't display the Connect To dialog box, shown earlier in Figure 30.11. If you never need to change the connection settings, deactivating this check box will give you one less dialog box to negotiate when connecting.

Show a confirmation dialog after connected: Deactivating this check box means that Dial-Up Networking won't show the Connection Established dialog box after a connection to the remote server has been established.

Redial: If the server is busy or down, your connection won't go through. Instead of retrying the connection manually, you can tell Dial-Up Networking to retry at regular intervals by activating this check box.

Before giving up retry x times: Use this spinner to specify the maximum number of redial attempts.

Between tries wait x mins y secs: Use these spinners to specify the number of minutes and seconds to pause between each retry.

Prompt to use Dial-Up Networking: When this option is activated, Windows 98 will prompt you when you attempt to access a resource that requires an established connection. For example, if you map a network drive during a Dial-Up Networking session and later attempt to access that drive while you're disconnected, Windows 98 will ask whether you want to connect.

Don't prompt to use Dial-Up Networking: Activate this option if you prefer that Windows 98 not prompt you to establish a connection.
