Chapter 8. Customizing the Mouse, Keyboa... > Calibrating a Game Controller

Calibrating a Game Controller

Nothing takes the joy out of playing certain kinds of games more than a joystick that's out of whack. If you use a joystick or other game controller for your Windows 98–based games, you want to calibrate it so that Windows 98 understands its features (range of motion, throttle, rudder, and so on). Here are the steps to follow to calibrate a game controller:

1.
Select Start | Settings | Control Panel and select the Game Controllers icon. Windows 98 displays the Game Controllers dialog box, shown in Figure 8.14.

2.
If your game controller is not listed, click Add, highlight the type of game controller you use, and then click OK.

3.
If you have multiple game controllers, use the Game Controllers list to select the one you want to calibrate.

4.
Click Properties to display the Game Controller Properties dialog box.

5.
Click the Calibrate button. The Calibration dialog box for the selected game controller appears.

6.
You now work through a series of dialog boxes that sets various properties of the joystick (such as its center position, as shown in Figure 8.15, and its range of motion). In each, perform the requested action, press a joystick button, and click Next >.

7.
When the calibration is complete, click Finish to return to the Game Controller Properties dialog box.

8.
To test your calibration, display the Test tab, shown in Figure 8.16.

9.
Move the joystick and press its buttons to test the calibration, and then click OK.
