16.1. Terminal for Productivity

While you may consider Terminal merely a tool for tweaking the guts of your system, the tools in the Unix side of Mac OS X can perform some tasks that are much more difficult—or even impossible—in the Finder.

16.1.1. The Unix Task Scheduler

The cron program is a daemon (background program) that's always working, even when you're logged out. For example, you can use cron to automate things like backing up files, updating a Web site, or cleaning up your desktop. You can even make your Mac serve as an alarm clock.
