Chapter 4. Microsoft Office Annoyances

Chapter 4. Microsoft Office Annoyances

Microsoft Office is the software that Mac users love to hate. Word has got to be the most annoying application on the Mac. There are times when I feel like I'm fighting with Word rather than using it. Yet, Word is also the Mac's most powerful word processor and the application I depend on the most. Excel and PowerPoint are equally powerful and also annoying in their own ways.

Paradoxically, the power of Office is responsible for both annoyances and solutions to annoyances. For instance, some of Office's annoyances are "features" that just get in your way; Microsoft turns them on by default, seemingly to advertise that the features exist. On the other hand, there are also annoyances that you can get around by using one of the gazillion features buried in the bowels of Office.

I'll show you how you can streamline your use of Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. I'll even provide you with some pointers on using Virtual PC, the Windows emulator included with Microsoft Office Professional. Entourage, the other notable member of the Office suite, is covered earlier in Chapter 2.
