Chapter 1. Mac Os X Annoyances > CUSTOMIZE SOFTWARE UPDATE

CUSTOMIZE SOFTWARE UPDATE

The Annoyance:

Updates I don't need-such as an update for an iPod model I don't have-keep showing up in Software Update. Each time, I choose not to install them, and yet they keep coming back. Now, they are starting to pile up in the list of updates. Why doesn't Mac OS X get the hint? Can't I just tell it, "Enough already?"

The Fix:

Indeed you can by tweaking settings in the Software Update application. Just visit the Software Update pane of System Preferences and click the Update Now button. After Software Update launches and gives you the list of Updates, select an update you don't want, go to the Update menu, and choose Ignore Update, as in Figure 1-20. (In Jaguar, this menu command is called Hide.) The update then disappears from list of updates. You can do this for as many updates as you like. If you change your mind later, you can choose Reset Ignored Updates from the Software Update menu.
