Chapter 3. Internet Annoyances > ICHAT AND AIM MESSAGING

ICHAT AND AIM MESSAGING

MOVE BIG FILES WITH ICHAT

The Annoyance:

Sometimes I have to send really large files to another person, but my email program reports that the file is too big. I know there are utilities to break up files, but this is a big pain for the person receiving the file.

The Fix:

Many people don't realize that transferring large files can be easier and more reliable with iChat than with email. Just start a chat session and drag a file from the Finder to the text message field in an iChat window. You can also drag a file to a name in the Buddy List. It doesn't matter how big the file, because iChat doesn't have a file-size limit to contend with. If you want to open the file that you have just sent, perhaps to discuss it in the chat, click on the link in the chat window. A Finder window pops up displaying the file. When you receive files, iChat saves them by default to your Desktop. You can change the location in iChat's Preferences (-,) in the General pane.
