Chapter 7. Hardware Annoyances > KEYBOARDS AND MICE

KEYBOARDS AND MICE

EJECTING WITHOUT AN EJECT KEY

The Annoyance:

My non-Apple keyboard doesn't have an eject key. I like the keyboard, but dragging and dropping CDs to the Trash is a pain. Yes, I know that discs get an eject icon next to them in the Finder's sidebar with Mac OS X 10.3 and later, but that means I have to first switch to the Finder and open a Finder window, then open the sidebar, and finally click on the icon. That's not any easier than the old drag 'n trash method.

The Fix:

Actually, your keyboard does have an eject key-the F12 key, which ejects CDs and DVDs on third-party keyboards, and on older Apple keyboards that don't have an eject key. (In fact, the F12 key on PowerBooks and iBooks is labeled with the eject icon.)
