Chapter 19. Shell Overview > Shell Flavors

19.2. Shell Flavors

Many different Unix shells are available on Mac OS X Panther. This book describes the two most popular shells:

  • The Bourne-Again shell (bash), which is based on the Bourne shell (sh). bash is the default Unix shell in Mac OS X Panther and is the most commonly used shell for other Unix-variants, including most Linux distributions and FreeBSD.

  • tcsh, an extension of the C shell, csh, that is included instead of csh on Mac OS X.
