B.4. Error Messages When Opening

If you get an error message when you try to open something (a program, a document, a folder), it may be that the permissions of either that item or something in your System folder have become muddled. It can happen to the best of us.

Fortunately, a new option in Mac OS X 10.2 is designed to identify and fix such problems automatically. Open your Applications→Utilities folder, and launch Disk Utility. Click the First Aid tab, click your hard drive, click Verify, click Verify Disk Permissions, and then read an article while the Mac checks out your disk; see Figure B-1.
