Background Images

Change my Desktop image?

System Preferences → Desktop

Control-click on the Desktop itself and select Change Desktop Background from the context menu

Have the pictures on my Desktop change automatically?

System Preferences → Desktop → Click on the checkbox next to "Change picture" and select an interval from the pull-down menu.

Use one of the Mac OS 9 background images for my Desktop instead of the (boring) ones that come with Mac OS X?

System Preferences → Desktop → Collection → Choose Folder. A Finder sheet will slide down; use this to navigate to Mac OS 9 System Folder → Appearance → Desktop Pictures. Then select one of the following folders, and click the Choose button: 3D Graphics, Convergency, Ensemble Photos, or Photos. The images in that directory will appear as part of your Desktop Collection.

Add a new background pattern, making it available to all users?

Create or save the image to either the Abstract, Nature, or Solid Colors folder in /Library/Desktop Pictures

Change the background of a Finder window to a different color or to an image?

Finder → View → as Icons; then use View → Show View Options (-J); select either Color or Picture for the Background option
