7.6. Modify your computer's name

Setup automatically assigns a computer name during Windows 2000 installation. This is the name by which the computer is recognized on the network. When other users browse the network for shared folders, for example, they see the computer name in the browse list.

Setup assigns a fairly cryptic name if you let it. In most cases, you'll want to assign a different name that is easier to remember for those users who want to connect to your computer's resources through a UNC pathname.
