Chapter 2. Configuring Hardware > Convert a basic disk to a dynamic disk

2.11. Convert a basic disk to a dynamic disk

The primary reason for upgrading a basic disk to a dynamic disk is to make it possible to create more than four partitions on the disk or to create striped, spanned, or mirrored volumes. When you upgrade an existing basic disk to a dynamic disk, any existing volumes on the disk are converted to basic volumes.

Before you upgrade a disk, however, understand that if you later decide to revert it to a basic disk, you'll first have to remove all volumes and data from the disk. This means you'll have to back up the data, revert the disk, and then restore the data.
