Chapter 11.  Web Services and Security > Add folders from other computers to yo...

11.3. Add folders from other computers to your web site

IIS is flexible in the way it enables you to add content to a web site. While each site has a primary home directory, sites can also incorporate other directories as virtual directories. This capability enables you to use folders on other local drives or even on other computers across the network within the site structure.

Virtual directories act just like local directories under the home directory, with their alias names serving as the logical directory name. You can use them in relative references within your web site page structure (linking to documents in the folders, for example), and users can connect to them by adding the folder to the site's URL.
