12.8. Prevent someone from modifying your registry

It's possible for remote users to connect to your computer's registry from across the network and make changes to your computer's configuration. In some cases, this is a good thing—administrators can make needed changes or repairs to your system remotely. The ability for remote users to access and modify your registry remotely can, however, be a security risk, particularly if your local administrator account is compromised.

If you share a computer with other users, you might also be concerned that they could make unwanted changes to the registry. So protecting the registry locally is also a consideration. Auditing is a third line of defense that enables you to keep track of registry changes.
