12.4. Verify that the digital signature attached to an incoming message is valid

The presence of a digital signature in a message doesn't guarantee that the sender's certificate is valid. The certificate could have expired or been revoked. You can configure Outlook Express to use revocation checking to automatically check the status of a digital signature. Revocation checking causes Outlook Express to automatically submit a status request to the sender's CA to verify the current status of the certificate. The CA then responds with the certificate's status so you'll know whether the ID is still valid or not. Keep in mind that your computer must be online to perform revocation checking.
