Chapter 4.  Configuring the Windows 2000... > Change icons of common desktop objec...

4.19. Change icons of common desktop objects

Windows 2000 uses a default set of icons for the desktop objects My Computer, My Network Places, Recycle Bin, and My Documents. You change the desktop icons through the properties for the desktop.

4.19.1. Restore or change desktop icons

The desktop properties include a set of controls you can use to specify the icon to use for the four primary desktop icons mentioned previously. You can reassign any icon you wish, pulling the icon from an executable file (.exe or .dll) or icon file (.ico). The files systemroot\ Sytem32\ moricons.dll and systemroot\ System32\ shell32.dll contain numerous icons you can use. Here's how to change the icon for one of these four objects manually:

  1. Right-click the desktop and choose Properties or open the Display object in the Control Panel.

  2. Click the Effects tab, select the item you want to change from the Desktop icons group, and click Change Icon.

  3. Browse for and select the file containing the icon you want to use, then select the icon itself.

  4. Click OK, repeat the process for any other objects you want to change, and close the Display property sheet.
