13.5. Back up critical Windows 2000 data without using the Backup utility

While the Backup utility does a good job of backing up your system's configuration, you might prefer to use a different method in cases where the Backup utility might not be available to restore the system. For example, if you can't boot the system you won't be able to use Backup to recover your registry or other configuration data.

Manual backup of the system state data requires that you manually copy the registry files, boot files, and files in the \%systemroot%\System32\dllcache folder. You can use a couple of different methods to back up those files outside of the Backup utility.
