Chapter 4. Personalizing Your Work Envir... > Getting General System Information

Getting General System Information

The General tab in Control Panel’s System program is a helpful, information-only window that displays:

  • The version of Windows installed on your computer (including Service Packs)

  • The Windows edition (Home, Professional, Media Center, and so on)

  • Registration information that was entered during Windows Setup

  • The type and speed of your computer’s processor

  • The total physical memory (RAM) installed on your computer

You’ll need some or all of this information when you request tech support over the phone, particularly if you’re talking to Microsoft.

To display general system information

  • Choose Start > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > System > General tab (or press Windows logo key+Break) (Figure 4.89).

Figure 4.89. The General tab gives information about your Windows version, registration, processor, and RAM.
