Naming Files and Folders

You can rename a file or folder to make its name longer, shorter, or more explicit.

To rename a file or folder

1.
In Explorer, select the file or folder that you want to rename.

2.
Choose File > Rename (or press F2).

or

Right-click the file or folder; then choose Rename.

or

In the task pane, click Rename This File (or Rename This Folder).

or

Click the file or folder’s name (not its icon).

3.
Type a new name; then press Enter (or click outside the name area) (Figure 5.30).

Figure 5.30. To replace the current name, just start typing. To change a few characters in the existing name, use the arrow keys to move to a specific position; then insert, delete, cut, or paste characters.


You can use the Cut, Copy, and Paste keyboard shortcuts (Ctrl+X, Ctrl+C, and Ctrl+V) while editing.
