active window

The active window is the one that is in front of everything else and is selected. You can tell if a window is active because the three little buttons in the top-left corner are in color, and the title bar icon is not shaded. It's important to become aware at all times of which window is active because that is the window that will accept any command. For instance, if you press Command Shift N to create a new folder, that new folder will appear in the active window (or on the Desktop, if the Desktop is active). If you press Command W in just about any application or in the Finder, it will close the active window. To make any window active (or the Desktop), single-click on it.
