Lesson 8. Discover the Special Gems in M... > Read Microsoft Word files

Read Microsoft Word files

TextEdit can open just about any Microsoft Word file and hang on to most of the formatting, including simple tables. The default in Tiger is set up so when you double-click on a file whose name ends with .doc, it automatically opens in TextEdit.

You can also drag the Word file and drop it on top of the TextEdit icon. (The TextEdit icon might not be in your Dock. If not, it's in the Applications folder. If you want the TextEdit icon in the Dock, drag it from the Applications folder and drop it in the Dock.)
